LADIES’ DAYS

Tuesdays are “Ladies’ Day” at Norbeck. However, for each Ladies’ Day, week­end play is available for those unable to play on Tuesday. Weekend play will be available on Saturday or Sunday before the designated Tuesday Ladies’ Day.

Members must sign up in Golf Genius or in the Pro Shop by the Thursday before the weekend and the Sunday before the Tuesday Ladies’ Day so that the Pro Shop can prepare the appropriate scorecards. On Tuesday Ladies’ Days (but not tournaments), an optional $1.00 fee will be collected for chip-ins.

To sign up for Ladies’ Day weekend play in Golf Genius, there is a Check box for weekend play. Make your own foursomes for Tuesday individual events and the Pro Shop will make pairings for team events. Some designated weekends will have organized tee times and the Pro Shop will make pairings for team events.

Ladies’ Day formats are a mix of individual and team events. For team events, the Pro Shop will do the pairings for both Tuesdays and weekends. If a foursome is not complete, a blind draw will be provided.

For all Ladies’ Days, at least two NWGA members must play together to attest the scores. Except for team competition, you may sign up individually or in twosomes or foursomes; you may also call the golf Pro Shop if you need someone to play with. The Ladies’ Day Chairperson determines the format for the day. Unless otherwise stated, all putts must be holed out; that is, into the cup. Immediately following their round, players must turn in attested scorecards to the Pro Shop. The number of points awarded to the winners will include the total field from weekend play and Tuesday; points will be awarded to 25 percent of the field. Winners will be announced after the Ladies’ Day event on Tuesday afternoon, and members will be notified via e-mail announcement.

Points awarded to winners on Ladies’ Days will be converted to club credit at the end of the season that can be used towards cart fees, dining and pro shop credit. Points are awarded as follows:

THE THURSDAY TWILIGHTER-NINERS

“The Twilight Niners”  is a Ladies Golf Group perfect for beginners. They play on Thursday evenings, two times a month from April through October. The group starts at 5:30 p.m. in the early months (April, May) of the golf season and switches to 6:00 p.m. when there is more daylight.

This group is open to Norbeck full and Associate golf members.  You do not need a handicap to join this group. This group plays only scrambles to make it a relaxed and fun evening for all participants. Each group will have a more experienced golfer to teach you the course, give you golf tips, education about basic golf etiquette, pace of play, and cart management. The fee to join “The Twilight Niners” is $60 for the season (cart fee is not included).  If you are not already a full NWGA member and wish to become one, you can do so for an additional $30 at any time during the golf season.  Please note: Any full NWGA members may sign up to play with The Twilight Niners, free-of-charge; however, they are not eligible to win a prize if they are in the winning group.

In addition to the Thursday evening play, the Twilight Niners are eligible to play in the following events:

SEVEN TROPHY TOURNAMENTS Trophy Tournaments

  • GrandOther’s Tournament: May 19 – Any NWGA member who does not qualify to play the Grandmother’s tournament is eligible to play in this tournament.An 18-hole individual net stroke play tournament played with 95% handicap. Net prizes (one gross) are awarded to 25% of the field. Tee times will be assigned following the Grandmother’s tee times. Entries close at 4:00 pm, Thursday, May 14.
  • Grandmother’s Trophy Tournament: May 19 – Any NWGA member who is a biological or non-biological grandmother is eligible to play in this tournament. An 18-hole individual net stroke play tournament played with 95% handicap. Net prizes (one gross) are awarded to 25% of the field. First tee time is at 8:30 a.m. Entries close at 4:00 pm, Thursday, May 14.
  • Flag Day: June 23 – An 18-hole individual net stroke play tournament using 95% handicap. Prizes are awarded to 25% of the field. The first time is 8:30 am. Entries close at 4:00 pm, Thursday, June 18.
  • Firecracker Open: July 28 – An 18-hole two-lady team scramble tournament. Teams will receive 35% of the lower handicap team member and 15% of the higher handicap member. Net prizes (one gross) are awarded to 25% of the field. The first tee time is 8:30 am. Entries close at 4:00 pm, Thursday, July 23.
  • Dogwood Better Ball: August 18/August 21 – A 36-hole net ringer tournament using 95% of handicap. Net prizes (one gross) are awarded to 25% of the field. The first tee time for both rounds is 8:30 am. Second day pairings are based on the first-day low net scores. If you choose to play in the two-day Dogwood Tournament, you have several two-day options. Although it will normally be played on Tuesday and Friday, you may compete on Saturday, August 15, Sunday, August 16, Tuesday, August 18 and/or Friday, August 21. When you sign up, you designate which two days you will be playing. If you have any questions concerning these rules, please contact the Tournament Chairperson before signing up. Note: you must play on the day(s) that you specified when you signed up in the golf Pro Shop. Entries close at 4:00 pm, Thursday, August 13.
  • Two-Lady Team: September 15 – The first 6 holes will be a Scramble using 80% of the lowest handicap; the second 6 holes will be a Pinehurst Scotch, using 60% of the lower handicap and 40% of the higher handicap; and the third 6 holes will be Better Ball of the twosome, using 90% of each player’s handicap up to 36. The winning team will be the lowest combined scores of all 6-hole rounds. Net prizes (one gross) are awarded to 25% of the field. The first tee time is 8:30 am. Entries close at 4:00 pm, Thursday, September 10.
  • President’s Classic: October 3 – The format of the President’s Classic will be determined by the NWGA president; notification will be sent to members beforehand. Entries close at 4:00 pm, Thursday, October 1.

Trophy Tournament Weekend Play

Women who cannot play the Trophy Tournament rounds on the regular scheduled day(s) may compete in the tournaments by playing on the Saturday and/or Sunday before the regularly scheduled day.

If you choose to play on the weekend, you must sign up in Golf Genius or the Pro Shop by the deadline, designating Saturday or Sunday play in the comment box of Golf Genius.

As another option, the Pro Shop is providing a block of tee times for organized weekend play for all the scheduled monthly tournaments. This will give those unable to play on Tuesday mornings a chance to participate as a group. If interested, tee times are typically assigned in the early afternoon so that groups can socialize together after their rounds. Sign-up email reminders will be sent out before each weekend of tournament play.

For either form of weekend tournament play, you must play with an NWGA member, and your card must be properly signed, dated, and turned into the Pro Shop immediately after play.

The tournaments that are eligible for weekend play are:

  • Grandmother’s/GrandOther’s Tournament: Saturday and Sunday
  • Flag Day: Saturday and Sunday
  • Firecracker Open
  • Dogwood Better Ball: Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and Friday
  • Two-Lady Team

Weekend play does not apply to the Ladies’ Club Championship, which has its own schedule for play.

Net and gross trophies (or credit to spend for cart fees, dining or Pro Shop) will be awarded to 25% of the field (rounded up), e.g., 20 players, 5 winners; 27 players, 7 winners. Tournaments will not be flighted, except for the Ladies’ Club Championship.

Similar to Ladies’ Day, points will be awarded as follows: First place 5, 2nd place 4, 3rd place 3, 4th place 2 and 5th place 1.  The dollar amount of the points will be determined at the end of the season.  

Pairings and times will be assigned on the basis of handicap, lowest tees off first, and play will be in foursomes from the first tee. Ties will be broken by the USGA recommenda­tion for ties. Call the pro shop for your tee time or check the Norbeck tee reservation online.

To enter a Trophy Tournament, sign up in the Pro Shop by the deadline announced for each tournament. Note: IF late entries are accepted, players will be placed at the end of the field, regardless of handicap.

Member-Guest

To play in the Member-Guest event, you must have an established WHS handicap and be a member of the NWGA. Also, your guest(s) must have an established WHS 18-hole handicap.

Members will be allowed to bring up to three guests to the Member-Guest event. There must be 2 to 3 guests in a foursome; for example, 2 members/2 guests or 1 member/3 guests. If you sign up as a twosome, the committee will attempt to pair you with another twosome, but there is no guarantee of entry.

Tournament Rules

To be eligible for Tournament play, you must have paid the annual NWGA fee of $90. Sign up in the Pro Shop by the deadline (which will be announced via email for each tournament). The Pro Shop will make pairings, which will be available in the Pro Shop on the weekend before each tournament or on the Norbeck online tee-time reservations sheet. The field will go out in ascending handicap order.

  1. Know the Rules – All players are responsible for knowing the rules governing each tournament. Rules will be announced before each tournament.
  • Changes – Any changes in times and pairings will be made by the Pro Shop and chairperson. Please be courteous and call the Pro Shop and chairperson if you find that you cannot play after signing up.
  • Time of Starting – The player shall start at the time laid down by the Tournament Chairperson. All tournaments are played from the first tee by assigned tee times, unless otherwise specified. If a member is late to the tee, the threesome should go without her. If the player arrives at her starting point, ready to play, within five minutes after her starting time, the penalty is loss of first hole in match play, or two strokes at the first hole in stroke play instead of disqualification. However, if the player is more than 5 minutes late, the penalty is disqualification.
  • Ties – All ties will be decided by the USGA recommendation, sudden death, 18-hole playoff, or match of cards, as designated by the Tournament Chairperson.

Note: The USGA recommended method of matching cards is to determine the best score for the last nine holes. If the tying players have the same score for the last nine, determine the winner on the basis of the last six holes, last three holes, and finally, the 18th hole.

  • Scorecards – Scorecards must be legible and filled out according to the instructions for each tournament, signed, and attested. All scores must be posted that day (see pp 15–17 for Trophy Tournaments).
  • Weather Closing – In the event of inclement weather, please call the Norbeck Golf Course Hot Line (301-774-7704) on the morning of the tournament for information about the course.
